Discover the taste of tradition with our family recipe: sausage and cauliflower umpenade. This unique dish, similar to a calzone with cauliflower and Italian sausage inside, is a cherished family recipe passed down through generations in our family.
It's more than just a meal; it is a piece of legacy, evoking memories of Italian dinners, family gatherings, and warm childhood moments.
Umpenade Recipe Ingredients:
Dough for bread (for top and bottom of pie)
2 lbs. of sausage (no skin), drained
2 pkg. of frozen cauliflower
2 onions
½ can plum tomatoes
Red pepper (if desired)
Salt & pepper
1 egg beaten with splash of water
Directions:
1. Fry sausage and remove from pan.
2. Fry onion and add tomatoes, salt, and pepper.
3. Add sausage back into pan and simmer for about 30 minutes. Set aside.
4. Allow cauliflower to defrost and slice flowerettes so they can lay flat.
5. Spread dough in round pizza pan.
6. Add a layer of cauliflower followed by a layer of sausage.
7. Once finished layering, cover with dough then flip over pie to prevent it from leaking.
8. Wash with mixture of egg and water.
9. Slit the top in several places.
10. Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Note: Make sure to drain sausage to prevent your dough from becoming soggy.
